Amaroo Tree Boxes

Post by boonut »

Just wanted to share information about the pots I use for large bamboo. The Amaroo tree boxes are great for:

1.) large bamboo
2.) dividing bamboo (you can take the boxes apart without hurting the roots)
3.) putting bamboo in the ground (you can take the bottom off very easily and then lift into the hole... take the sides off and your bamboo is safe in the hole without any damage to the root system).
4.) growing any plant because they have vertical ridges that divert roots back into the root ball instead of running around in circles which you normally get with a round poot.

Here is a picture..

Boonut,
Where are you buying your boxes? It doesn't look like there is a distributor anywhere near me. Are you getting them from the place in Donna, or do you have them shipped?

Would you mind sharing how much they run?
Thanks

Boonut,

I can see, in the upper left corner of your picture, part of your crane you use to lift your large plant boxes.

I purchased the first 20 or so 38 gallon pots from the place in Donna... Kinney Bonded Warehouse. Later, when they ran out, I searched high and low for more. One of the workers at Kinney Bonded put me in touch with a tree farmer that was going out of business. I purchased a truckload from him for $20 - 75 gallon, and $16 for the 38 gallon. They really can last quite some time. The big pots have nylon screws, so they don't rust. I purchased nylon screws for the 38 gallon pots. They had galvanized screws and after a few years, they did rust a bit. I like the nylon screws much better.

When I first purchased them from Kinney Bonded, I think I paid only $24 for the 38 gallon. I think they made a mistake in the price... I think that is what they paid for them. I really like them.

Great! Thanks for your help Allen. The boxes look really practical, and I'm not a terribly strong person, so not having to dig boo out of the ground to make divisions is really not so easy, having it in a giant pot that comes apart sounds ideal. We're thinking of buying some acreage in the next year or two, (maybe in Wharton county?), and I'd like to get lots of things growing in pots. This looks great for my *tiny* city lot.

Here's looking forward to wide open spaces :D

Here is a picture with my son and our "Big Wheel" dolly. It works great on those 75 gallon pots. The big problem was lifting them into the truck. I solved that problem on my trip back from Florida. I picked up an aluminum trailer in Florida. Now I can just pull it onto the trailer.

As you can tell from the pics, it is still raining. I think it has been raining almost every day for a while now. I did get out this morning early and plant about 15 palms and 22 Casuarina Cunninghamiana trees. Now they are getting drenched.

Here is a picture of a very large dolly from Kinney Bonded Warehouse... I wanted this one, but it was just too much $$$$. The one I got was only $84.

Here is a picture of one of the 38 gallon pots when I was getting ready to divide a B. Beecheyana "pubescens". Notice how the vertical ridges turn the roots back into the soil mass. Sure is easy to make divisions this was as opposed to digging up a clump. Another nice thing about the huge black pots is the amount of heat they absorb when you want them to... they make the boo shoot much sooner. Put them in full sun about half way through February to get the heat going... then put them back in the shade in July to keep them a little cooler.

If you click on the icon, where the picture is supposed to be, then the picture will display. I'm like you in that I don't understand why the image doesn't automatically display in the post. :?:

Maggie, I found this place online that sells the 25 gallon tree box for $22.50.

http://www.raintreenursery.com/catalog/ ... uctid=T378

Shipping is a killer if you only buy one box. For one box shipping is $19.95, but for 10 boxes it is $56.25 ($5.63/box) which is reasonable.

I just don't know if 25 gallon boxes are large enough for what I want. :?: From the Amaroo web site the 25 gallon box is about 20" across and 16.5" deep. They have a 130 gallon box that holds over a cubic yard of soil. :laughing1:

edit: after looking at the different size box dimensions it appears that the 25 and 36 gallon boxes are almost the same width, but just different depths (16.5" vs 21"). So the 25 gal. might work ok. Even the 40 gal. isn't that much wider... only 1.5" wider than the 25 gal. You really have to go to the 75 gal. before you see a large increase in box size. I think I'll order up 5 of the 25 gallon boxes ($29.95 shipping, or $6/box) :)

I had to go see what the 120 gallon containers look like... so, I went to Donna today and purchased two. They were $67 each. They are a little deeper than what I like, but these might work for the Parker Giant or D. Giganteus "Quail clone". I may just set these out in my yard in the city and put nice stone or block around them to decorate. These are so large, that you wouldn't have to worry about someone stealing them.

I was a little disappointed to see that it has metal screws instead of the nylon ones. The 31" - 75 gallon seems to be the best. It will hold up and uses nylon screws.

I purchased some of the bolts and thumb screws made of nylon, so I can switch them out.

The 24" Premier Tree Box is the one I have the most of. It is built very solid and can hold up to bamboo. I also have some of the 24" S tree boxes and they are a lot thinner in terms of design and durability.

Boonut,

You need to get that huge thing fitted for a set of wheels and tires. One of these days you will want to move it and lifting a 120 gal. pot is going to be a chore. Once you get the wheels and tires on it, then you can follow a good ole Southern tradition by taking the wheels and tires off and putting the pot up on blocks.
