Mantis I hope your are right about the dry September, that would be definately better then the alternative. It Starts with "H".
My newly planted Vulgaris cutting is starting to show stress from being flooded I think I will dig it up this week end and re pot it. Rats I was hoping for it to get established before winter. Nothing else seems to mind the exsesive rain.

Tons of rain in Brooksville, FL today. The boo are loving it. Strong wind gusts with the thunderstorms took down a bunch of branches from the scrub oak and now they are even uglier. If only the boo would size up quicker I would get rid of them all!

I was expecting the clone-x that we dug from Roy's yesterday would fall over with all that wind but it stayed up. I'm sure its loving the rain...

Rynamor,

Perhaps you should relay your trials and tribulations in digging out the Clone X? After watching you digging out a big Clone X culm, I think I know now why my shoulders are in such bad shape.

Maybe you should host a strongman competition in your backyard?

Right now I would have to sit on the sidelines and watch, but I've dug out many culms from large bamboos such as Clone X, D asper, B. oldhamii and the like. My orthopedist doctor told me that my muscles were stronger than my bones and that my muscles were wearing out my joints. I've never told him about all the digging I've done over the years.

To summarize:

Roy's Clone X Clump: 1
Ryan: 0

It pretty much kicked my butt. I came in with visions of digging up 3 or 4 culms, and barely left with one.

Next time I'll bring a backhoe to do the digging.

Rynamor,

I just went outback and measured where we topped the Clone X clum that you dug out. We topped it at about 20 feet and at the 20 foot mark the diameter was 3 and 1/8 inches. Do me a favor and measure, about chest high, the culm you have and let's get a diameter measurement. If you don't have a caliper, just take a tape measure and measure the outside circumference and we'll figure the diameter from that. I knew the one you dug was a good sized one, but I didn't think it was quite that big in diameter.

Roy,

I took a tape measure to it, and if my math is correct, about 3 and 1/5 inches. Unfortunately no caliper yet. Can you get those at nurseries?

Ryan,

One of the best gifts I ever gave myself was I ordered a plastic caliper from Adam and Sue Turtle for $5 bucks. I'm not sure who's selling this type right now, but they work great.

A little over 3 inches on the Clone X? You must have picked out one of the smaller culms to dig.

When you get the clum growing for you, how about taking a picture and uploading it. Here's one that made it to Austin, Texas. You can see the old topped cut original culm in the middle:

Ryan,

I have some white plastic calipers like these orange ones. These are $3.50. I didn't look at shipping costs.

What has really surprised me is that my Mexican Weeping is doing GREAT! Tons of new shots, and is upsizing very nicely. My dwarf Mexican Weeping boos were starting to look sad, but they are still in pots, so I just brought them under the covered patio, and now they are happy. :)
So a couple weeks ago I was in the back yard with my 3 year old, and I had to move the dwarf mexican weepings back under the covered patio because my wife had moved them onto our deck for some reason, and they were getting water logged.

I don't remember saying anything to him when I moved them back, just that they need to stay out of the rain.

Well this morning he wakes up, and out of the blue he is really mad at my wife. She asks what is wrong, and he says that I told him that she keeps moving the little bamboos, and she is hurting them. I have no idea where that came from. Nice 2 week delay though. :laughing1:
