Clumping bamboo in a confined space?

Post by markdoddridge »

Last spring i planted a 15g pot of lako (among other things) right between a cinderblock retaining wall and an actual wall. The retaining wall is about 3 feet tall and runs the length of my property. behind the retaining wall is about 3 feet of dirt, then a tall 9ft cinderblock wall behind that (and a busy city street behind that). Basically there is a 3ft by 60ft trench where i have planted several clumpers to block out the view of my house from the street.

Do i have anything to worry about? will the bamboo adjust fire when it reaches the confines of the 2 walls and just spread sideways? or do you think it has a legitimate chance of breaking the wall? the bricks are mortared in place and are a good 6 inches thick.

Eventually you will have issues, a pachymorph bamboo that is healthy will have a rhizome mass beyond the older culms and each year it will attempt to expand out in a circular fashion. If the planting area is only 3 feet wide then I would expect issues in under 5 years.

Roy Rogers has a post here somewhere in that he explains how he controls the tropical clumpers with concrete pavers/steppers - perhaps if you use the search engine you may find the info. I don't see him checking the forum anymore - Roy, where are you?

Sorry. I've been straightening some things out in my life. I think all is well now, so hopefully I'll be around a bit more.
