Jiuzhaigou browning

Post by firemountain »

My Jiuzhaigou has been looking a little brown the past week, and now it seems it may have acquired a disease. Towards the bottom of the plant, I see these little white clumps at the top of the nodes. When I touch it, it breaks apart and crumbles like a powder.

Can anyone tell me what type of disease this is, and how to treat it. Also, it is planted next to scabrida plants. Do I need to worry that this will spead to my other plants? Can I save this plant or is it too late?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Going by your description, I would say you have a fungal problem on your plant. Have you over watered to compensate for the lack of rain we've had? Has anything changed since your last post? I see several home remedies listed via a straight forward Google search: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&clie ... =&gs_rfai= I myself have not had any large scale fungal problems so I've never really tried any of the solutions mentioned on that Google search.

From What I Have Read-

With the application of cornmeal, a naturally occuring, beneficial fungus begins to rapidly grow, feeding off of the cornmeal, and the immune/defense system of this beneficial fungus wipes out competing/detrimental/parasitical fungi. It is said to be highly effective in treating lawn problems, even athlete's foot. The cornmeal as it is broken down acts as a mild fertilizer.

Hi Dominick,

Thanks again for the nigra you gave me, it's doing great, very healthy.

My Jiuzhaigou is getting some brown leaf tips and it is shaded by noon or 1 pm. It was doing great before all this heat. 10 new shoots, all larger than the plant, from a 1 gallon plant received in April. I think they really don't like sun and the kind of heat we have been getting.

I have not tried this but was thinking about shade cloth like they use for tobacco.

Could that white stuff be downey or powdery mildew?

I put Eccosense copper soap on my MOSO seeds and it kept the damping-off at bay, they all sprouted. You probably already know this but, there are anti-fungal and mildew sprays available at home depot, etc. From my experience even the ecco, oraganic, enviro friendly, whatever ones are pretty effective.

How is your scabrida?

Mine is looking much worse than my Jiuzhaigou, it gets a little more sun. Not many new shoots, just one that's shorter than the plant, like an abort but it's not dead. The leaves on the rest of the plant are looking a little droopy and turning a light yellow green instead of dark green like my other bamboos. Alive, but not really thriving. It doesn't seem to tolerate cold or heat :?:

Glad to hear that the black boo is doing great!! My scabrida that are shaded are going great, no leaf burn and very bright. My 1 Jiuzhaigou is sick, as per this post, which I just treated..... hopefully it wont get any worse and I can save the plant. The other Jiuzhaigou is going wonderful.....but that is in a lot of shade as well.

My scabrida that is in the sun on the other side of my property is not doing well, tips and some leaves on the top are brown....probably since it is getting almost full sun.

Did your Jiuzhaigou recover?

I am also curious why you had to remove one of your groves(from another post)?

Don't mean to pry, I have a similar climate, soil, and hope to learn something.

My Scabrida is fine but thin fall shoots.
