Noticed 2 new shoots on Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Alata' today. I am assuming this means my other aureosulcatas will commence shooting very soon?

My almost totally freeze fried 1 gallon division of Castillon is shooting! 3 shoots so far, albeit tiny ones.
Also there are 3 new Moso shoots today. That makes a total of 5 new Moso shoots from my 1 year old small division (probably somewhere around 1 gallon size field division, taken from small bushy growth around the edge of the Anderson grove), all measuring in the 3/8-1/2 inch range in diameter. So far the tallest is still only about 5 inches.

Fargesia Robusta and Fargesia Scabrida both started shooting this week, March 16. It has been a cool and wet March here in Portland.

Re: Boo Shoots for 2011
Heteroclada is a pretty early shooter around here as it's the bamboo other than rufa that has come up well before April. Freezes will keep on occuring for at least another month, but they don't seem to bother the shoots on this species.
Here's the tallest shoot so far which came up following the 60s in the last couple days.

Re: Boo Shoots for 2011
Some of my bamboos are shooting way too early since it will be back into the teens-30s towards the latter part of the week, but I don't think they are high enough to get set back too much.
Here's my outdoor fargesia rufa. It doesn't seem to be gaining any size however my neighbor's one keeps getting bigger every year from a division off the original plant when I bought it back in 2009. Here's one of these guys on the plant I have outside.

Potted rufa in the greenhouse, a bit farther along.

As most people here know already moso is an early shooter, but I never expected one of my remaining 2yr old ones to shoot this early. BTW this one is in the ground too, but hopefully it is smart enough to stay down until the major freezes are over. I covered it up with some leaves. Perhaps the major leaf burn was a trigger to the early shoots.

Rubromarginata is starting to shoot too, so this one might have its shoots fried.

Ph Nigra shoots started a couple of days ago. I tried directing the rhizomes with compost and it worked perfectly, shoots coming up in a line 10 ft from main clump. Moso shoots are well over 8 ft tall already.

Re: Boo Shoots for 2011
My 1 gallon division of spectabilis planted this past fall has started shooting. I have seen 2 shoots so far, both about twice the diameter of the largest culms in the division.
